HARUMI IKOMA King's Voice Actor
Outline:
History of KingIn the game Art of Fighting and the first two KOF series, King's shirt will be ripped off if she was hit with a super attack. This is due to her sad past in childhood.
Her ChildhoodKing is an elegant and lovely lady, but she hides her beauty under men's clothes, for no reason other than to pass herself off as a man. It all started when she was a little girl; she was sent to Thailand, along with her little brother Jan, to learn Muetai. King, despite being a female, demonstrated herself to be a quick learner and skillful student, and could even face the best of fighters. However, she could not fight in official tournaments because of her sex. That struck her as very sexist and narrow-minded, and she was disappointed that she could not compete and test her skills. At a certain degree, she even despised herself for being a woman. However, her creative mind gave her an idea that would enable her to enter a sanctioned tournament...
In the next Muetai tournament, all the competitors were surprised by a blond short-haired youth who wore a shirt. They were even more astounded when that person began advancing quite easily in the tournament ladder with his impressive fighting ability. The person blew the competition away and reached the finals in no time, where he had to face the current Muetai champion. The fight began pretty evenly, but it seemed the man named only as "King" was getting the upper hand as time went by. In a sudden burst of rage, the champion took hold of King's shirt, but King gave him a devastating blow. The force of the impact tore off King's shirt, and her secret became evident to the crowd: she was a woman. Everybody was shocked and dumb-founded by the revelation, but no one was more stunned than King... the organizers, upon discovering her secret, ruled out the final bout invalid and threw her out of the competition. The humiliated King traveled to the United States, where she hoped to start a new life with her brother.
King arrived in Southtown, a city teeming with crime and corruption due to the reign of the mob lord Geese Howard. With the money she saved up, King opened a bar downtown, since she always enjoyed a drink. The terrible incident in the tournament plagued her however, and she hated her womanhood more than ever. From then on, she decided to dress herself in men's clothing, and tries to talk and act like a man.
King and Ryo First MetOne day, a man named Ryo Sakazaki broke into her bar and demanded information among the patrons about her kidnapped sister Yuri. King stepped in the way and told Ryo how barbaric it was for him to break into her bar just like that, and that if he wanted information he had to fight her. It had been a while since she last fought and she wanted to see how it felt like to be in combat again. They were pretty evenly matched, but Ryo was determined to find his sister, so he fought with more spirit.
He also wasn't aware of the fact that his opponent was a woman only dressing up as a man. History repeated itself for King then. During the heat of the battle, Ryo threw a Ko-Ho-Ken at King's unguarded side. The searing ball of energy blew King away and ripped her shirt to shreds. Ryo was then startled to see his opponent futility trying to cover her exposed and rather voluptuous chest. Realizing his mistake, Ryo apologized sincerely and helped King up. King was taken by the gentlemanly manner of her adversary, for no man had treated her with that kind of respect before. Ever since that incident, even though she denied the fact to herself, King always liked seeing Ryo.

King at a glanceKing is very reserved, and does not like to behave all womanly around strangers. She also tries to talk and act like a man, though she can not deny her femininity because of her gentle heart. King enjoys drinking, but moderates herself so she never gets drunk. She feels safe around Ryo, the one man important to her and close to her heart. She also cares deeply for her brother Jan, always doing her best to help him in his sickness and see that he is cured. King is aided in her bar by the twin waitress sisters, Sally and Elizabeth.
Role of King in KOF seriesExcept in KOF 97 & KOF 98, King has always been the leader of Female Fighter's Team. Unexpectedly, King joined The Art of Fighting Team (AOF Team) after accepting Yuri Sakazaki's invitation in KOF 2000, and now she is back to Female Fighter's Team in KOF 2001.

More about her fighting styleIn every charactor profile which I saw about her fighting style, it is always be Thai Kickboxing. But once I read a comic of KOF '94 (translated Japanese version) I learned a little bit more about her kickboxing. In the story, Terry Bogard asked Joe Higashi (the Thai Kick boxer) about King's nationality. Then he mentioned something about "Savate".
Definition of Savate from Britannica Online:
From the definition above, we know that King's fighting style is NOT actually Thai Kickboxing but "French Kickboxing". Since King is a French, it is not surprising that she knows her national sport and use it as her fighting style.
They are pretty alike, isn't it?
In the story, Terry Bogard mentioned that the special about Savate is that since the savate fighters wears shoes, they will use the tip of the shoe, which is the hardest part, to kick straight to the opponents head and cause great damage. (Besides the standing D attack, check the other obvious moves like Miracle Kick, Tornado Kick (revised version), and Silent Flash).
I think this can best explain why when both Joe Higashi and King's fighting style is Thai Kickboxing, but they have different techniques of attacking (it is because they are not actually the same type of kickboxing). The only same technique I observed is their throwing technique with D button (strong kick). They grab their opponent with their leg, then throw them to the opposite site. Kind of special technique from what other charactor used. (I think only Mai Shiranui, the female ninja and Clark Steel, use the same D button throwing technique)

Reasons why I liked King
Favourite Move: Silent FlashShe's so smart! She has leadership skill! And she's so cool! Especially the way she holds the wine goblet and drinks it! I already liked her since I play KOF 98 and know all her moves, my favourite move is Silent Flash SDM, how could anyone possibly turn around in that angle and go all the way high up to the screen?
At first, I really really thought that she is a man! (oh God!!!) it is because the way she looks in the small portrait in KOF 98. After when I found out that how could a man joining the so called "Female" Fighters Team, I felt so stupid! What a fishy beginning!
Special opening and endingShe is one of a few character that throws something after winning the game (Terry Bogard throws his hat and Robert Garcia throws his syling). Ever since AOF 2 when she throws her handkerchief until now, I learn the same thing every time I throws a paper into the dustbin. (Hmph! Nasakenai!)
Also, she is the only one that drinks before fighting. Among a few remarkable opening, King drinks some wine first before she fights ever since KOF 94. It is just in different style every year. I hope that this tradition will be continued forever.
Just to choose my favourites...Until now, my favourite male character in KOF series is, of course, the "never Mr. Nice Guy" Iori Yagami, and my favourite female character ... (don't you see I'm doing a webpage for her?).
Since there are a lot of Iori's fan pages out there, so I did this web page dedicated to her because I found out that a lot of people like to use her, but not much detailed information about her.
It is not necessary that girls will like to use female characters and vice versa. I don't know why, but a lot of my friends and relatives thinks in this way. I like Mature too (the weird thing is, both King and Mature shares the same birthday, and, both of them hated each other because of that), although some of her pose makes me feel like vomit. The sad thing is Mature only appears in KOF 96 and KOF 98. Well, never mind, as long as King is there, I'm happy. :)
